I went to Argentina in April for two
weeks with my friend Carol Lloyd. She
had received a grant from Kaiser Permanente
to do some research on Chagas, a little
known but very serious parasitic disease
carried by a bug called an assassin bug.
It is a disease of the poor. It has a long
and colorful history and Argentina seemed
like an interesting place to go. The disease
is fairly common in a northern province
called Chaco.
Unfortunately, due to the danger of Dengue
in that area we changed some of our plans
and ended up visiting an area in the north
slightly south of Chaco called Santiago de
Estera.
Carol had made arrangements to meet and
interview several doctors and scientists in
Buenos Aries. Once we were in BA she was
able to make the arrangements to visit a
town in Santiago de Estero.
Here are some stories and pictures
of our adventure.
Another friend, Deb Ostergren, accompanied
us as a translator and travel companion.
Our first day in Buenos Aries was
wonderful. We walked from our hotel,
The Sarmiento Palace Hotel, to the
part of BA called Recoleta.
It's very quiet and residential.
We went to the cemetery where
Eva Peron is buried.
It's a beautiful park, filled with trees,
art and lots of cats!
